  2. Juan was asked by the baker to take care of a boy, and since he was running away from Carmelo, he wanted to have a shelter and a job to survive. “On your word of honor that you will feed and pay me as I say, I demanded, or I will run back to the gypsy right now” (Trevino 34). This quote clearly explains that Juan is scared of Carmelo’s presence, but he has to get money and food in order to go to Madrid. He hoped to be acknowledged by the owner.

“How does it happen that such a ragged little blackamoor speaks such good Spanish?, he asked me” (Trevino 36). Juan frantically appealed to blonde and handsome caravan, so that he can travel to Madrid with him. “I am the slave of a gentleman, I told him proudly, and I was brought up in an aristocratic house. That’s how I learned my Spanish” (Trevino 36). However, the guy said he can’t go to Madrid with Juan. That is because no one would believe that Juan is his slave and have no proves. As a result, Juan was given money and had to travel alone. It was very severe and tough for Juan to achieve his goal.

After he gets whipped by Carmelo, he was mentally and physically unconscious. However, the master found him and told that Carmelo is now gone. He is like the savior of Juan. “I am the master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard” (Trevino 39). I think he was a very nice person. Although, I don’t think he really disagreed with slavery, he gave him new clothes and gave him enough food.

  3. "'My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven'" (Trevino 33). A baker asked Juan if he could help with baking since his son was sick. Juan really wanted to do that job because he thought could go to Madrid. Also Juan was running away from Carmelo, so he didn't have a place to be at. He got food and money from the baker.

Juan meets a young blonde man on his way to Madrid. The blonde man asked Juan why he spoke good spanish and Juan says " 'I was brought up in an aristocratic house. That's where I learned my Spanish' " (Trevino 36). The man accepted Juan to travel together, but the man wouldn't go to Madrid together because no one would believe that Juan is a slave.

Later Juan gets punished by Carmelo, and he gets whipped by him. But Carmelo tells Juan that he is the master and he would take care Juan. Also that he would learn to become useful to Carmelo. "You will learn to help me"(Trevino 39). The space between what Carmelo does and says has a difference and it makes me wonder if he is a good person or bad.

  4. "My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven" (Trevino 33). A baker asked Juan if he could help baking since his son was sick.Juan really want to get this job so bad because he was running away from Carmelo.

Juan went to Madrid for five days. On the third he was followed a young blonde man and meet him. "How does it happen that such a ragged little blackamoor speaks such good Spanish... I was brought up in an aristocratic house. That's where I learned my Spanish" (Trevino 36). The man accepted Juan to travel together, but the wouldn't go to Madrid together because no one will believe that Juan is a slave.

Later Juan gets punished by Carmelo and he gets whipped by Carmelo. But the master was taking care of Juan. "I am the master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will help me" (Trevino 39).

  5. Don Carmelo is mean to Juan, and he doesn't let Juan eat. "I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep," he hissed at me, catching up a piece of wood from one of the cooking fires and starting for me"(Trevino 30).

A baker's son is sick, so he asked Juan to shovel flour and help tend the voen for his son. "My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven"(Trevino 33)

Juan was beaten by Don Carmelo, but the master takes care of Juan. "I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard"(Trevino 39).

  6. "Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye" (Trevino 30). This quote tells me that Juan should get his own food by stealing, since Carmelo doesn't give food to him.

Because the baker's kid is sick, Juan was asked to take care of the boy. Juan wanted to really do the job to get far away from Carmelo. "'Let me, let me!' I begged, forgetting all about my fine airs, which, truth to tell, did not match my dirty rags and half-starved look"(Trevino 33).

Juan gets punished by Carmelo after he was caught working at the bakers shop. But soon, Juanico comes and says "I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard"(Trevino 39). Now, Juan has to work for Juanico.

  7. The baker asked Juan, " My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven." (Trevino 33). The baker needed another slave because his boy was sick. So then, Juan was really happy to hear that, he wanted to run away from Carmelo because the way he treated Juan was horrible.

Juan finds a blonde man who was on his way to madrid. Juan asks if he can watch over his animals. The man said,"How does it happen that such a ragged little blackamoor speaks such good Spanish" (Trevino 36). The man accepted Juan to travel with him.

Later on, Juan gets found from Carmelo and gets whipped. He was all bloody and hurt. But the master tells Juan that Carmelo is sent away and now, he tells Juan that he's safe and he won't get beaten again.
"I am the Master,Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me" ( Trevino 39).

  8. Juan wanted to escape from Carmelo and depart to spain. Then a man stopped and talked to him. “ ‘On your word of honor that you will feed and pay me as I say,’ I demanded, ‘or I will run back to thegypsy right now’ ” (Trevino 34). Juan was asked to help because the mans son had been ill. Even though he was a slave, he demanded things to a master and that was pretty weird.

He followed a highway to Madric and there were few people on it. "At the end of the day I approached him and asked to watch over his animals at night, and run along by his side during the day" (Trevino 36). Usually, a master would command the slave to do something but instead, Juan the slave asked an unknown person could he do some of his jobs.

Carmelo was taken away and a little man came to him. He was a very nice guy and from this, we can tell that not all masters and mean. Many masters are nice and they take good care of the slave. " 'I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house,... ' " (Trevino 39).

  10. Once he got whipped Carmelo, Juan became both mentally and physically unconscious. Luckily, the master found him and told him that Carmelo is now gone. “I am the master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard” (Trevino 39). He was basically the one who saved Juan. He seems very nice, but not like those typical slave owners. Although, i don't think hes against slavery, he just treated Juan nicely with food and clothes.

"My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven." (Trevino 33). These words meant that the baker wanted Juan to look after his son while he was gone, and Juan accepted. And Juan was paid to look after the child.

"At the end of the day I approached him and asked to watch over his animals at night, and run along by his side during the day" (Trevino 36). This happend on a highway to Madrid, and he saw a few people. Usually, a master would command the slave to do something but instead, Juan asked if he could work for him.

  11. "You'll get the same, little blackamoor, if you make any trouble," If he made a mistake the gypsy will be hit like the mule.

"I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep" Juan was a bother to the gypsy.

"You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again." The new master is different from the others.

  13. "Ill give you a beating! That`s the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep" (Trevino 30). This quote is said by Don Carmelo. He got angry because of Juan begged him for food and he didnt have enough for a slave so instead he beated him up.

While Juan is beaten up by Carmelo a gypsy girl said to him "Let the "little black go"(Trevino 30). This quote tells me she is helping Juan but still its racist to say that juan is black. This also tells me there are some people who treat the black people like dogs and some like a proper human but there are people who treats the black people in both ways.

Now Juan is scared of his new master even though he never met him. "is master good? is he kind? Will he beat me?"(Trevino 39). Juan is afraid of his master since Carmelo beaten him up.

  14. "'I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep,'"(Trevino 30).
"'Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye'"(Trevino 30). This tells that Cameleo didn't gave Juan food, and so Juan should've been get food by himself.

"'My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven'"(Travino 33). Cameleo treated Juan in bad way so Juan wanted to help the baker and ran away from Cameleo.

Later on, Juan gets caught and punished by Cameleo, but his master takes care of him. "'I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard'"(Trevino 39).

  15. “...we joined the little caravan and unloaded and pegged out our mules to browse... I was half falling with fatigue” (Trevino 30). The quote explains that the owner was using the slave as they wanted to. Slaves were forced to follow the directions of the owner, so it tells that slave's life wasn't easy.

Juan was tired by the hard work and begged the owner for food, but instead the owner said, “'Learn to steal food, like a Romany rye,' he told me... 'But if you want to go hungry, sit and wait for your meal!'” (Trevino 30). The owner can give any directions, however, they will not listen to what the slave says. For the owner, slaves were just their worker or helper.

Although owner of the slave is thought as a bad person, this quote could change that stereotype. “I was given a coat; the baker's wife had made it for me, using some old scraps of cloths in her chest” (Trevino 35-36). Usually, owner wouldn't be nice to the slave, but this owner actually helped Juan. The treatment of the slave depends on the owner.

  16. "Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye," (Trevino 30). This quote tells me that Don Carmelo doesn't want to share his food that he tells Juan learn to steal. I think Don Carmelo wanted Juan to get his own food.

"My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven." (Trevino 33). Juan accepted that he will look after the bakers son. Juan wanted to get away from Don Carmelo so he was happy to get a job.

Juan gets whipped by Don Carmelo for working at the bakers place. Juanico tells Juan that he will never get beaten again and also that Carmelo is sent away. "I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard." (Trevino 39)

  18. "'I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep,'" he hissed at me, catching up a piece of wood from one of the cooking fires and starting for me...Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye...and I would teach you many useful tricks. But if you want to go hungry, sit and wait for your meal! It will not walk to you, I promise you that!"(Trevino 30). This quote shows that Don Carmelo doesn't care if the slaves die of fatigue or does stealing and gets caught.

Juan was thinking of running away because Carmelo treated him badly when he was stopped by the baker. The baker's son was sick and he needed someone to help him bake bread. Juan accepted his offer because he hated Carmelo and wanted to get out of his control. "'Let me, let me!' I begged...'Let me! Only don't tell Don Carmelo where I am. I would rather go find my true master in my own time, and without the gypsy's kicks and blows all the way'" (Trevino 33) The work was hard but Juan didn't care if Carmelo was out of sight.

Juan asked the new master "is master good? Is he kind? Will he beat me?"(Trevino 39) because he had bad experiences with other masters, such as Don Carmelo. Before his first master and mistress died, he was loved, fed well, and was never treated badly like Carmelo did treat him, but after spent days with the gypsy he could no longer believe other people.

  19. "But when he had none of his own wild people near to divert him with their music, he amused himself by beating me." (Trevino 32)
This quote is talking about the master named 'Don Carmelo' who is leading many gypsies and merchants to Madrid and as it is showing from the quote, Don Carmelo kept on hitting Juan whenever he wants so you can say that the relationship between Juan and Don Carmelo was typical slave and cruel master.

"No. I must eat meat or cheese when you do, and have my two loaves, and also a good warm coat when I leave." (Trevino 34)
This quote is showing the relationship between Juan and his second master name 'Don Dimas' who is town baker. The person who is speaking the quote is Juan and as you can see Juan is requesting something to his master which you can not actually do that to a master such as Don Carmelo. So you can tell that Don Dimas is a bit too dumb to have a deal with slave.

"I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard" (Trevino 39)
This quote is from Juan's third master and you can predict that master is pretty nice. You can not really tell 100% but seems like this new master is giving Juan many things. Juan is treated better, he got a new clothes and better food. The relationship between Juan and the third master would be more like assistant and boss. I will say that this master would be the most nice master.

  20. "'I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep,'"(Trevino 30). This quote shows "Don Carmelo" (the master) showing his feelings towards slaves, which was a typical feeling which slave owners would show to their slaves.

"My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven." (Trevino 33) This quote shows that Juan was accepted to his new job which was to look over the bakers son. This was a great chance to run away from Don Carmelo.

“I was given a coat; the baker's wife had made it for me, using some old scraps of cloths in her chest” (Trevino 35-36). This quote, i think was unique, because usually slave owners do not treat their slaves with respect, but in this case, the baker thought about Juan, which was a large gap in my perspective.

  21. "I'll give you the beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep"(Trevino 30). This quote tells me that Carmelo is treating him badly. Carmelo is having a different thinking about slaves than the real owner of Juan de Pareja.

"My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven"(Trevino 32). This man looks like he needs help and when he said this quote, Juan de Pareja said that he wants to help. He wanted to get away from Carmelo as quickly as possible. So he begged the man to let him stay for 40 days and the man lets him work. He is planning to go back to Madrid and go ace home. He doesn't want to be bullied by Carmelo.

"How does it happen that such a ragged little blackamoor speak such good Spanish?"(Trevino 36). This person lets him go to Madrid together. He was surprised to hear a slave speaking such a good Spanish. That tells me that his owner was treating him very well that it doesn't seem like he is a slave.

  22. "I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep" (Trevino 30). This quote is said by Don Carmelo because Juan De Pareja started to beg for food.

"Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye" (Trevino 30). I think this quote meant about how the slave's owner didn't want to feed Juan De Pareja some food, so he tells him to steal your food from others.

"I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard"(Trevino 39). This quote is about the Master Juanico and his slave and it shows that the Master will give him tasks but you will need to be able to be flexible about the works and the commands that Juanico gives.

  23. "I'll give you beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep" (Trevino 30). Don Carmelo did not let Juan to eat food. He was not nice to him.

"I was brought up in an aristocratic house. That's where I learned my Spanish" (Trevino 36). This quote shows that he finally accepted Juan to go to slave, but the man didn't believe so he wouldn't go together.

"My boy is sick and I need young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven"(Trevino 33).
The baker needed a new slave because his boy was sick.

  24. He was mentally unconscious after he got whipped by Carmelo. Anyways, the master found him and told that Carmelo is now gone. “I am the master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard” (Trevino 39). I think that he is nice person and I dont think that he doesn't hate slaves because he gave food and cloth to them.

"My boy is sick and I need a young fellow to shovel flour and help tend the oven"(Travino 33). Juan was treated badly from Camelo, so Juan wanted to help baker and runaway from Camelo.

"I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house,..." (Trevino 39). This quote tells that not all the masters are mean. Camelo was taken away from a little man and he was very nice.

  25. "I will always be grateful to her for one thing-she taught me my letters" (Borton de Trevino 6). This quote shows us that Mistress, Emilia, was not only treating Juan nicely but she also had respect for him, because she chose him to write her letters. That wasn't the only time when Mistress shows her caring about Juan. When little boy got sick, Emilia would always be with him.

"I must have touched many hearts with pity, for I was by then in rags, thin, and frequently bleeding from some blow that Don Carmelo had dealt me" (Borton de Trevino 32). Here we can see that after Mistress's death, Juan was owned by this cruel man who was in charge of Juan getting to Madrid. Don Carmelo didn't feel sorry for Juan at all, the only thing he would think about all the time was money which he will get.

"You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again" (Borton de Travino 39). Diego Velazquez is an owner every slave would dream about. Velazquez will never beat or treat his servants badly. He knows that slaves are the same people as everyone else.

  26. “Learn to steal your food, like a Romany rye” (Trevino 30). This is when Juan learns that Don loves to sing, dance and drink wine around the fire wherever he can find a gypsy camp. Juan is exhausted and hungry. "I'll give you a beating! That's the best way to put an empty stomach to sleep" (Trevino 30). He suffered horribly at the hands of a cruel gypsy mule driver. Juan begs Don for food, and Don strikes him with a club.

"I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard" (Trevino 39). After this Juan has recovered from his injuries and been given a new suit of clothes. Juan was well-fed, loved, taken care of.

“ I will take him with me; they will care for him at the covent. And you, boy. you must pray and give thanks, and ask to be shown why God has chosen to save you...” (Trevino 15). After he becomes a pageboy to a wealthy Madrid woman, he had a mistress who was very kind and taught him how to read and write. Brother Isidro saves Juan later on after his owner’s death from plague.
