1. Describe Juan's treatment beneath Velazquez. (1 Paragraph - Must include a quote).
2. What were some of the duties he had?
3. How did Velazquez react when Juan could not stretch the canvas properly? What does this say about Velazquez's personality?
4. What does this quote tell us about Velazquez? "Master had not denied me of his own free will, but because he was forced to do so, by the law" (49)?
5. What do we learn of the style Velazquez used to paint? (Use a quote in your response. Be specific).
6. What was the most important factor for Velazquez's new studio?
1.Velazquez treats Juan more humanly, he doesn't starve him, beat him, or mistreat him. Velazquez told Juan that he will not be beaten or mistreated, meaning Juan is in good hands, plus his master and mistress are both busy so they don’t see his every mistake. “You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again” (JDP).
ReplyDelete2.He had to help his master with mixing his paint cleaning and filling his palette, making his canvases, etc...
3.Velazquez doesn’t freak out like other slave owners would, instead he patiently says his mistakes and shows him a demo. This shows that Velazquez is a caring and gentle person.
4.Velazquez didn’t purposely say that, he didn’t want to teach him art he just can’t or he will be arrested, and this quote also supports question 3.
5.“His strokes on the canvas, too, sometimes seemed slapdash, rough and unintelligible” (JDP), “He never chatted while he worked” (JDP), this shows he is quite concentrated on his work.
6.Velazquez needed light, “It must have light. Light. Nothing else matters....” (JDP).

1.Velazquez doesn't treat Juan like a slave. Velazquez treats Juan as if he is a family. Velazquez never harms Juan and always keeps him healthy and clean. "He had allowed me to rest and heal in those first days in his home" (Trevino 42). Also Velazquez wasn't strict, so even Juan made mistakes he wouldn't get mad.
ReplyDelete2.He helped his master with mixing paints and cleaning.
3.Valazquez doesn't get mad a Juan. Instead he shows Juan the steps and examples. It shows that Velazquez is a nice person.
4.Velazquez was not allowed to teach art to Juan because it was a law.
5."When Master was working intensely, he did not even glance at his palette" (Trevino 52). This quote tells me that he is very serious and concentrated in his art.
6.Even though the room smelled awful and had not much light Master didn't care about it. I think it means that room is important to him.

ReplyDelete1.Velazquez doesnt make him work from the first day, and he let Juancio rest for few days. And after a while, when his wounds recovered, he started to work. But later on he realized that the amount of jobs he had to do was really less than he used to. "However, I soon found that I was not to do anything but serve Master, and he did not even want me to help him dress or to lay out his clothes." (Trevino 42)
2. few of the works was to help other people in Velazquez's house, but most of it was helping others paint. "I know you love color, Juanico. You may help me choose the colors for my embroidery, and I will ask Master to give you sole charge of this chest" (Trevino 48).
3. Instead of beating or going crazy maybe like other slave owners, he was calm, and show and tells his mistakes.
4.This quote tells us that Velazquez didnt hire Juanico from his own, or he didnt want to hire any slaves, but he was forced to
5. He is very cerious about his work and he does not appreciate it when others talk to him when he is in to painting. ""I am working, Juanico," was his answer. "Working by looking." " (Trevino 45)
6.The most important factor about his new studio was that he had alot of light in it: "It must have light. Light. Nothing else matters..."(Trevino,54).
1. Valazquez is really different from Carmelo.
ReplyDeleteValazquez treats more nice and he cares about him alot. Even though Velazquez is quiet, he still teaches Juan how to draw and he shows alot of respect even though he's a slave,
"You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again"(Trevino39).
2 Juan helped Velazquez by adjusting the windows,to stretch cotton canvas in frames, grinding the colors, etc.
3. Velazquez just sighs and gives juan another chance. He doesn't scream like Carmelo, but Valequez just keeps it to himself and doesn't blurt it out. I think that Valequez is a kind person who doesn't beat Juan just because he failed 3 times.
4. Even if Velazquez wanted to teach Juan, he can't because it's against the law. "but there is a law in Spain which forbids slaves to practice any of the arts" (Trevino48).
5. He is really serious with his work because he works hours and hours all afternoon in his studio. He's quiet, concentrating and he doesn't want anyone to bother him. "He was always in his studio until the light went into the afternoon"(trevino44).
6. "It must have light. Nothing else matters."
(trevino)
1. Velazquez treats Juanico nicely and kindly. Juanico didn't treat him like he was his slave, and he didn't show physical violence against him, unlike Don Carmello, and Velazquez is more calm and caring. He let Juanico rest and recover after the rough days of Don Carmello, and little by little, Velazquez gives him jobs and other roles for him to do without being mad or violent at him. "He had allowed me to rest and heal in those first days in his home" (Treviño 42).
ReplyDelete2. The duties that Juanico needed to do was to grind the colors, then incorporate them into oils. He also had a job to clean all of Master's paintbrushes with soap and water, so his Master can work straight ahead from the morning.
3. When Juanico couldn't stretch the canvas properly, Valazquez kindly showed him the correct way to stretch it properly, without getting frustrated or mad at him. This shows that Valazquez's is friendly and patient.
4. I think that quote means about how slaves were not allowed to learn art by Masters, not only art, but because he's a slave. It was a law back then, but Valazquez didn't say that to hurt his feelings or anything, because its just the law Valazquez might get caught for breaking the law.
5. The style that Valazquez used to paint was by being concentrated while painting/drawing. He didn't want anyone disturbing him, or even talking to him. "He was always in the studio until the light went in the afternoon, but he was always not painting" (Trevino 45). This passage tells us he's very focused on his painting.
6. In Valazquez's new studio, the important factor for him was light. In several quotes in page 45, it mentions light many times. Also in another page, it also mentioned about that light was important for him to paint. "He liked the early light when it was still fresh from the dew,..." (Trevino 45).
1. Juan was being treated very nice. Valazque treated more like his family than a slave. He kept Juan clean, and never harmed him. He didn't even get angry when Juan makes a mistake. "You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again"(Trevino39).
ReplyDelete2. His master was a painter, so he had to mix paint for him and clean the paint after finishing painting.
3. He teaches him how to do it, and of coarse, he doesn't get mad. His personality is that he is pacient & gently.
4. He had to take care of Juan because he was forced to.
5. "When Master was working intensely, he did not even glance at his palette" (Trevino 52). He only looks at his painting, so he wont make a mistake. I think also because he trusts Juan.
6. He needed light. If he doesn't have light, he wouldn't know what kind of colour and what kind of picture he is drawing. I know this because I like drawing.

1. The first day Juan went to Velazquez house, he wasn't treated like a slave. He was as treated as his child. Also, Juan didn't have to work for the first few days. Velazquez took good care of Juan and kept him heathy and clean. "I am the Master, Juanico. I will take care of you. You will learn to help me. You will be useful here in my house, but your tasks will not be too hard." (Trevino 39).
ReplyDelete2. Juan's duties was to grind the colors and incorporate into oils. Also he had to wash Velazquez paint brushes clean and fresh every morning.
3. Velazquez didn't yell at Juan like Don Carmelo. He showed an example so easily, so quickly.
4. Velazquez didn't really mean what he said. It is against the law and he doesn't want to get arrested by teaching him art.
5. Velazquez's style to paint is to concentrate. He wanted to focus on his drawing without anybodies bother. "I am working, Juanico," was his answer. "Working, by looking." (Trevino 45).
6. No matter what the light is important.

1. "However, I soon found that I was not to do anything but serve Master, and he did not even want me to help him dress or to lay out his clothes" (Trevino 42). This quote is talking about how Valazque is not like any other slave owners. Valazque is not using Juan to do little stuffs what slaves usually do, so you can tell that Juan is not treated like any other normal slave probably more special.
ReplyDelete2.Stretching cotton canvas to the frames. Make the paint out of the powder (you have to make the powder soft first) then after his work is done, Juan has to clean it.
3. At that time, Juan was frustrated that he could not do his work properly. Then Valazque started to show him how to do it step by step. Which means Valazque is patient person or he knew that Juan would be frustrated about his work so I can say that Valazque is wise person.
4. This quote is saying that Valazque had no choice that he can not teach Juan how to paint because the law at that time, everything else is okay but you are not allow to teach a slave about artistic stuffs.
5. "I am working, Juanico," was his answer. "Working, by looking." (Trevino 45)
This quote is showing the style of his work. This is when Valazque was looking at one place for long time before he draws.
6. There were many problems to make the room useful for normal people but only thing Valazque cared about was light of the room.

Juan was treated nicely and respectfully by Valasquez. Before he was adopted by Valasquez, he was horrified of Carmelo’s existence. Juan was beaten up by him and was treated brutally. Therefore, when he first met Valasquez, he was fulfilled with fear and nervous. However, things went in a very different than what he imagined. Valasquez gave him new clothes and gave him enough food to eat. “I had begun to love him, you see, and to wish to offer him all my heart’s loyalty” (Trevino46).
ReplyDeleteHe had to help washing paintbrushes, so that as soon as he wants to paint, he can easily move into action. In addition, he had to help mixing paints and built a frame and stretched a canvas with wooden pins.
“He lifted my head at once, smiled briefly, a mere flash of white teeth under the small dark mustache, and hurried back to his easel” (Terevino 44). Valasquez was always calm and never showed his anger. In fact, he gently instructed and gave Juan a chance to try it again.
Juan blurted out that he wants to learn about art. However, he couldn’t because it was against the Spanish law. Slaves weren’t allowed to practice any of the arts. As a result, Valasquez couldn’t teach him about art or he will be guilty.
His style was he always wanted to be concentrated. So while Juan was helping, he never spoke at him. He also thinks that color is very essential for paintings. “No Juanico. There is a faint underlay of blue, but there is violent in that blue, the faintest touch of rose” (Trevino 46).
Valasquez emphasized that light is always important. If there is no light, it is blurry and you can’t define the shape and its color. “I hope they haven’t sent some courtier to select and prepare a studio for me. It must have light. Light. Nothing else matters….” (Trevino 54).
1) Juan was treaded more like a human underneath Velazquez. Instead of just using him, he told Juan that he will 'learn' how to work for him. But for the truth, he wasn't really helping the master and mistress, he was just serving. "Iwas not to do anything but serve Master" (Trevino 42). Because he was beaten up, he was given new clothes including a jacket. Very unique for a slave, he actually had his own room next to the kitchen and ate better food.
ReplyDelete2)He brushed clothes, rubbed oil to boots and belts, grind colors, arrange palette for master, and stretch cotton canvas to the frames.
3. Unlike other masters, Velazquez did not get mad at Juan. Instead, he just smiled to him. From then on, Juan never made a mistake.
4. It tells us that Velazquez is a really nice guy and he wants to teach Juan many stuff but due to the law, he just can't do those stuff.
5. "When Master was working intensely, he did not even glance at his palette" ( Trevino 52). From this, we can tell that his art must be pretty good. It is my opinion but real artists can feel the art so they don't really have to look at the palette.
6. His studio needed light.

1. Juan was treated by Velazquez very nicely and gently. The house was comfortable and foods were provided. He also gave some space for Juan to rest. “He had allowed me to rest and heal in those first days in his home” (Trevino 42). This quote shows how Velazquez took care and how he treated Juan.
ReplyDelete2. Juan was given a duty to help Velazquez. Velazquez was a painter and he wanted someone to help his painting, so he used Juan as his helper.
3. When Juan failed to open the canvas, Velazquez did not get angry at all. Instead of being mad, he introduced Juan how to open the canvas properly. This explains that Velazquez is a calm and nice person.
4. The quote explains that Velazquez needed to say “no” to Juan. He just did not want to break the law, although Juan wanted to learn how to paint.
5. Velazquez's style of art was to observe the shape and its colors. “When I sit and look at something I am feeling its shape... I am analyzing the colors too” (Trevino 45). This was to help writing an outline by remembering its appearance in his fingers.
6. The most important factor of Velazque's new studio was the light. “All he thought about was light” (Trevino 42). He did not care about the temperature or the smell. He just wanted a light and if the light was blocked by fog or rain, he gets nervous.

1)"You will be healed and washed and given new clothes. You will never be beaten again" (Borton de Trevino 39). This quote shows us that Don Diego is treating Juan kindly and most important, respectfully. Don Diego talks to Juan just like he is a normal person too, not a slave. It was very rare when an owner treated his slave like that.

Juan said that the color is blue, but Don Diego could see that it also has violet, highlights of red and bright green.
6) The most important thing for Don Diego was light. Without the right light he can't paint anything. He was worried after he knew he has to paint king's portrait because maybe they will make him a new studio without a proper light.
