A Girl Named Disaster Blog # 4

Please read Pages 88-98 and respond to the following prompts in complete sentences.  You should write between 2-4 sentences for each response.  Any responses with incomplete sentences will automatically be counted as incorrect.

1.  Why had the Musengezi River become a "dangerous place to sail" (90)?

2.  What makes Nhamo almost physically ill, even though she realizes that the sickness was from "her spirit, not her body" (93)?

3.  Paraphrase the story Nhamo tells her mother about the creation of the hippo.

4.  Look at the map in the front of the book.  How did Nhamo get lost?  Keep in mind her ultimate destination being Zimbabwe?

  1. 1. Because when the Portuguese dammed up Zambezi, it pushed the water back up the mouth of the Musengezi, which made it dangerous. Also during the civil war, Portuguese soldiers came throught the village and destroyed all the boats.
    2. She was seasick for a minute. It was her first time she felt completely alone.
    3.A hippo came out of the water next to Nhamo and started roaring, in the midafternoon. Nhamo was so surprised that she headed right to shore. As soon as the water was above her waist, she jumped off of the boat and ran in the water. She sat on the shore the rest of her day, with hippos floating around her. Silence fell as the hippos left the water and went for grass, while Nhamo climbed back into her boat.
    4.I think she got lost when she met those hippos, which she was scared of. Another reason is that maybe because there were two direction, so she might have gone through the wrong one.

  2. 1. The Musengezi rive had become dangerous place to sail because the river had been damned up by the Portuguese. The river was pushed back up to the mouth of the Musengezi, widened, and it made the river a dangerous place to sail.
    2. The thing that made Nhamo almost physically ill was because she was alone. She almost became sick because she was alone for the first time in her life. Nhamo usually slept with a troop of girls that comforted her while sleeping.
    3. The story of the creation of the hippo was told that the hippo was the animal that hadn't been given much care. The hippo was made by the Mwari when he was tired of making animals. The hippo was described to be very ugly and only half of it was made, there was not enough clay to make the hippo.
    4. I think Nhamo got lost because her boat had changed directions by currents. Instead of going straight to Zimbabwe the currents drifted her way and forced her back, while she was sleeping.

    2. She was ill because of loneliness. She has never spent the night alone. She was very scared spending the night in the dark alone so that made Nhamo almost physically ill.

    3. Mwari was making many kinds of animals. But he was too tired of making so he only made half of the last animal he was going to make, which was hippo. So the hippo was made very ugly.

    4. What I think is that Nhamo was resting on the boat and she got lost. I think She got confued with the direction.

    2.What mad her physically ill was loneliness. She always had people sleeping around her so she wasn't scared. But this was the first time she felt completely alone.

    3. Mwari was creating plants and he was making animals one day. He was making animals all day long. As day passed Mwari became tired, and he took a big block of clay and poked in holes for eyes. The last animal was only half-made and it was very ugly and bad tempered. It was the hippo.

    4.Maybe the boat was going to a different direction. Or while she was sleeping the wind changed the direction and Nhamo sailed that way.

  7. 1. The Musengezi river is "a dangerous place to sail" because the Portuguese had dammed Zambezi, and in result, all the water had been pushed and forced into the Musengezi river, and it isn't safe to sail there.

    2. Nhamo is almost physically ill because she is lonely and sad without anyone to support and keep company with her. She is always with her friends and family, and it is her first time to go somewhere far away on her own. She is feeling homesick as well. I think that she isn't comfortable by being by herself alone.

    3. The story of the creation of hippopotamus started when Mwari was making objects like Mother Earth, human beings, animals, etc. Mwari made many animals, but he couldn't think of any more animals to make. Then he made a creature called Hippopotamus, which was a bad-tempered creature, which was made without thought and Mwari himself didn't like his creation.

    4. I think that Nhamo got lost by not paying attention to where she is going, such as sleeping, relaxing, etc. When she isn't paying attention, I think the river current pulled her away to one of the river paths. There were also other paths so she might've got confused.

  12. 1 Because the Portuguese troops dammed Zambezi and pushed all the water to Musengezi river so it was risky and dangerous to sail. And the portuguese destroyed boats in nhamo`s village.

    2 She is ill because she is lonely by herself and there`s no one to company her. i think its like homesick that she`s missing her family.

    3 The myth of the creation of the hippo is about god Mwary was making earth and animals human etc. He ran out of idea s of animals so he made a mistak and made a short tempered dangeorous creature the hippo.

    4 I think she chose the wrong way or the currents were to strong that she could not control the boat and went the wrong way.

  13. 1) The reason the Zambezi river is dangerous is because the Portuguese dammed the river. Meaning the the water from there was moved to the Musengezi river.

    2) Nhamo was physically hurt because she felt lonely. She was used to sleeping with other girls but now she has to live by herself.

    3) Mwari was tierd of making animals, and did not show much care for the hippo, so he never got finished, because the was not enough clay. So the hippo ended up every ugly.

    4) The currents must have changed, while Nhamo was sleeping. Leading her to being lost in the river.

    2. nhamo was physically injured due to her lonely feelings. she use to sleep with other people, but when it came to sleeping by herself, she felt really empty.

    3. mwari got tierd of making animals, so he didnt care much about the hippo, and due to not having enough clay, the hippo did not fully become how it was imagined.

    3. Mwari was making different kinds of things. But one day she made animals. While he was making he got tired of making them. The last animal was a hippo but he only made half of it. The hippo was very ugly and bad tempered because Mwari made it without hope so he didn't really like it.

There was always somebody who was waiting for her, but in the middle of the river nobody waited for her, even her aunt who needed Nhamo for collecting wood.

Then he made a man and then he mixed men with flowers and water and made woman.

    2. She was about to get ill phisycally because you would understand if you were alone but for person who was with someone else all the time it's really hard for them to stand alone so I think the reason Nhamo made sick is loneliness.

    3.Mwari was the one who created all the animals but when he was creating this animal he got too tired of making animal so Mwari didn't put much effort for the animal he was creating and what he created was 'Hipo' so in this story hipo treated as very ugly animal.

    4. I can't really tell by just looking at the map but there was this part when Nhamo fell asleep and she lost her way which means she didn't or couldn't see what was going on and control the boat so I guess the current of the stream changed her way.

    3. First of all Mwari was making creating many stuffs, earth, plan, animal, etc.... but one day when he was making new animal he was tired of making animals and that las animal was hippo, which was bad tempered.

    Nhamo had never been to a situation like that before, because she lived in the village with a lot of people surrounding her everyday. Now though she was completely alone in the boat, without knowing what is going to happen.

    Mwari, the creator of animals already made so many that he got so bored of his job. The last animal he formed was the ugly hippo, because Mwari didn't put much effort on it.

    Nhamo was told by her grandmother that she shouldn't mix up the way she should go. Apperently Nhamo got nervous and confused during the beginning of the trip. Also she may had fallen asleep, so she missed the place where she had to turn.

    2 Nhamo was NEVER alone... she was always with aunt chipto, masvista, ambuya, everyom¥ne.. But this time, she had NEVER been in a situation like this before. So she wished that she had never ranned away from the village.

    3 Mawri was making animals for the motherearth. But one day, he got tired of making animals so he was halfway done with the hippo but he got sick of it so the hippo is a one ugly creature.

    3. Hippo, was made my Mawri, who was creating all sorts of animals. But one day, he was creating something, but got bored, and have left it with no effort. It turned to be ugly, which was hippo.

    4. My prediction, Nhamo was tired of being chased by hippos and many dangerous events, and all the loneless that made her phisicaly ill, which have made here sleep. She could have saled somewhere she really do not know...

  33. 1.The Musengezi River became a dangerous place to sail due to the Portugese who dammed it up, which pushed the water back into the mouth of Musengezi. This effected to be ‘a very dangerous place to sail’.

    2.The reason why Nhamo was almost physically ill was the feelings of loneliness she had; the fear of sleeping alone in the dark with all those unknown creature in the ocean. She had never really felt this before, because she usually slept with many others in the village.

    3.The creation was hippo was Mwari who created many other animals that was very successful. The last animal he formed was this hippo described very ugly since Mwari was too exhausted to make any effort on this hippo.

    4.I think Nhamo lost her direction while she was sleeping. She probably went the wrong direction, not the one she was told to turn.
