Okonkwo is the protagonist of this novel. He became famous as a wrestler because he threw Amalinze the Cat who was unbeaten for seven years at the age of eighteen. Okonkwo likes his household to be disciplined for his father had been a lazy man.

Unoka was Okonkwo’s father. He died ten years before the story started. He was a slacker and did not work. Instead, he liked to play the flute and be merry by drinking wine with his friends. Therefore, he did not have enough food for his family and was a debtor and owed all his neighbour some money. He was laughed at for being a “loafer”.

Nwoye is Okonkwo’s son. He is a boy of twelve who displeased his father by showing signs of laziness like Unoka. His father tries to correct his bad habits by beating and nagging him. Nwoye is becoming a sorrowful young lad because of this.

Okonkwo dislikes his father because he was a very lazy man who did not try so hard and was always piling up debts. He was ashamed of him because he was a failure. He did not leave a barn to inherit because he did not have one.

Ikemefuna was ordered to live with Okonkwo’s family because when the girl was taken by Ogbuefi Udo to replace his kidnapped wife, the clan decided that the boy’s fate should not be decided so quickly. So as a representative of his clan, Okonkwo agreed to take care of him.

Ndichie is a word meaning elders. Ndichie in Umuofia is probably highly ranked and is looked up to.

  3. The man, Okonkwo is the lead/main character of the story. He is a very hard working man who despises to be idle and lazy. He is also known to be strong since he won against a great wrestler named Amanlinze the Cat. He was not afraid of war and had killed many at quite a young age. What Okonkwo feared more than anything was to become a failure. This was probably influenced by his father, an idle man who cared not to pay off his debts to other people. Okonkwo was feared among his family also, and none of his wives and children dared to complain at the amount of work he kept them doing

Unoka was Okonkwo's father. As said before, he was a very care-free sort of a person who spent his days being lazy and dreaming about music. It's odd because I thought children were supposed to become like their parents. Anyway, Unoka was unlike Okonkwo and blood made him feel queazy. He was not a fighter. He had many debts, but never paid them back, spending any money he had on feasts. He died of swelling ten years before the story began, but did not get a proper burial for swelling was said to be bad.

Nowye is Okonkwo’s son. He was a normal boy, but because of his father’s constant nagging and beating, he became a very unhappy and weary boy. The reason of Okonkwo’s disapproval to his son was because he thought that Nowye was becoming more like Unoka and being very idle. Okonkwo’s fear of failure is almost out of control in my opinion. Maybe Nowye will see that too much working would result to being like his father and instead is prompted to becoming like Unoka. I wonder why Okonkwo doesn’t think of that?

Okonkwo hated his father because his father was a failure. When he was young, his father did not earn enough for his mother and Okokwo even to eat. This probably traumatized Okonkwo and taught him that laziness was wrong. He became the opposite from his father. Since his father did not leave anything for him when he died, Okonkwo had to build his fortune himself. With a lot of work, he succeeded. I don’t know if he’s happy though.

The elders decided that there was no need to kill Ikemefuna, the sacrifice, so soon. Until the time when Okonkwo’s people decided to kill him, Ikemefuna was asked to live under Okonkwo’s roof. This was probably because Okonkwo was pretty much wealthy and had room in his household, but was not too high ranking to refuse the request. I think because of this, the elders decided that he was capable of keeping Ikemefuna for the time being.

The African word (or actually words) I chose is “Nna ayi”, which is on page nineteen of the book. This means “our father” in English. Okonkwo used this when he addressed Nwakiebie. I think Okonkwo had a lot of respect towards Nwakiebie to have used such words. Considering Nwakibie’s status in life, this is very likely.

  5. 1. Okonkwo is the protagonist of the story and is well known throughout his village. He is famous because he beat the great wrestler, Almanze the Cat, who was unbeaten for seven years. He, unlike his father is a wealthy farmer and even though he was still young, he was the greatest men of his time.

    2. Unoka was Okonkwo's father. He died ten years ago, and was extremely lazy. When Unoko was young, he was very good on the flute, but when he became an adult, he was a failure because he borrowed lots of money but never paid back.

    3. Nwoye is Okonkwo's first son who was twelve years old. Okonkwo was anxious that Nwoye's laziness might turn him like Unoka. So, Okonkwo beat, and nagged Nwoye, but now, because of the beatings, he was becoming a miserable child.

    4. Okonkwo disliked his father because his adult life was a failure with no titles. Therefore his only goal was to do the opposite of Unoka. To not be gentle and idle.

    5. Ikemefuna was ordered to live with Okonkwo because the elders thought they didn't need to kill him, so until they were going to kill him, he was to stay at Okonkwo's house.

    6. "chi" means personal god or fortune

  6. 1. Okonkwo is the main protagonist of 'Things Fall Apart'. He is famous for overthrowing Amalinze the Cat, who was a champion for seven years. This makes him really well known throughout the whole village. Okonkwo also believes in strict discipline to keep his family in line, and is also a very wealthy man, who farms for a living. Although he has proved to be a very hard working and strong, he seldom shows his emotions, except when he is angry. Okonkwo has his own set of morals that states that you must not show affection, as it shows cowardliness. This is why I'm not sure that Okonkwo is actually a happy person or not, but he seems to be satisfied of how he turned out to be compared to his father.

    2. Unoka was the father of Okonkwo, and is the exact opposite of his son. He was considered as a failure because in his adult years, he was a really lazy individual. He spent his time daydreaming about music, and became really poor since he couldn't pay off his debts. Any money that he acquired was quickly spent on massive feasts. Unoka dies ten years before the story actually starts, due to swelling.

    3. Nowye is the son of Okonkwo, and is an average boy, yet he has grown a fear for his father, since Okonkwo frequently beats him and criticizes his actions. This is why I have the image of Nowye as a weak, quiet and defenseless young boy. Yet, Okonkwo always makes sure that Nowye doesn't follow in his father's idle footsteps of carelessness and laziness, so I guess Okonkwo shows his side of tough love with his son.

    4. Okonkwo had always had an unstable relationship with his father, since his father wasn't really the man, or even a father that Okonkwo looked up to. His father was considered as a failure to him, and to the whole village, since he couldn't pay off his debts, and support his family like he was ought to. Through this harsh childhood, Okonkwo probably grew up to live by his own morals of productivity and by not being lazy, unlike his father. Another thing was that, when Okonkwo's father died, he did not leave behind any fortune for his son, so Okonkwo needed to build up his own from scratch. After much hard work, he is able to establish himself a good fortune, and had successes, so I think that Okonkwo had finally proven to himself that he had acquired more than his father had ever had.

    5. Ikemefuna was said to live with Okonkwo's family, because the elders finally decide that they didn't think it necessary to kill Ikemefuna, the sacrifice, too soon. Until the elders decide to kill him, they asked Okonkwo and his family to house him, due to his wealthy status. The elders probably think that Okonkwo's house was a good place to keep Ikemefuna until he had to be sacrificed.

    6. The word in African that I chose to define is 'chi', which frequently comes up in the book. It can mean both a personal God, or a fortune.

  8. 1. Okonkwo is the protagonist in the story. He is a very bold and fearless man who has the qualities of a great leader. So far, we learn that he is quick tempered, and rarely shows affection (or any other emotion, for that matter) to his family members, who are under his strict rule. He blames his father for this.

    2. Unoka was the father of Okonkwo. He was considered the weakest man in his community, and would spend most of his time sitting in mud while playing his flute, instead for working hard in the fields so that he could support his family. He also owed many debts to people, many of which he did not repay before his death.

    3. Nowye is the eldest son of Okonkwo, who, like the rest of his family, is a victim of Okonkwo's quick temper and severe consequences. Nowye is said to be "lazy", as Okonkwo sees it, and frequently receives nags and beatings from his father. At the age of 12, it is said that he has become a sad youth.

    4. Okonkwo is a man of strength, and his number one fear is being considered weak. When he was at a young age, he learned that his father was the weakest man in the village, disliking him because he could not live up to the normal standards of every other man who was trying to support a family. He feels that he never had the normal coming of age as other men did. He did not inherit any barns, or wives, so he had to start his life from scratch, with no help from his father whatsoever.

5.Ikemefuna was said to be looked after by Okonkwo's household. The elders of the village did not think it was really necessary to kill him. For the time being, until they decided his fate, he was to be housed with Okonkwo's family.

    6. The word I chose is "Agbala", which is a word for a woman, but also a word for a man who never acquired a title in his life. It was also the name of The Oracle in Okonkwo's village.

Why was Ikemefuna ordered to live with Okonkwo? Ikemefuna was ordered to live with Okonkwo because the other older people thought that they didn't have to kill him, it was unnecessary,so he was to stay at Okonkwo's house.

  13. The protagonist of this story is Okonkwo. He is well known throughout his village and has beaten a guy called Amalinze, the cat. This event happened when he was 18 years old, which made him famous in his village. Differentiating from his father Unoka, he is a successful man.

Unoka is Okonkwo’s indolent father, who had died ten years ago. Really different from Okonkwo, he was good flute player, good with language etc, however he was a man who was lazy, and had lots of debts to pay back.

Okonkwo’s first son is Nwoye was similar to Okonkwo’s father. His hobbies

were different from Okonkwo. Nwoye was treated and raised like Okonkwo in the future, that is why Nwoye describes his childhood as sad and depressing one.

Okonkwo dislikes his father since he thinks he was a worthless man, having to borrow money all the time, not being able to feed his wife and children and Okonkwo seems ashamed of his father dying not being able to pay his debts back.

Ikemefuna was forced to live with Okonkwo since the elders thought there was no need of killing him and deciding his fate, but instead that he could live with Okonkwo.

I chose the word “Ndichie” which means elders. In this books case the elders are the Umuofia.

    4. Okonkwo disliked his father because he firstly, doesn't like people who are lazy and don't do any effort. Unfortunately, Unoka was that kind of person. Okonkwo was ashamed of his father and his lack of work which also made the family really poor. For that, to not become like his father, he worked hard and hated Unoka and everything that Unoka liked.

    5. Ikemefuna came to Okonkwo's family as a sacrifice to the village of Okonkwo and their gods. Because the daughter of Umuofian was killed, to atone this crime, he was brought to the village with another virgin girl who was married to the husband of the killed woman. He had to work in Okonkwo's family as a household and became really close with the son, Nwoye.

Okonkwo's strict and over-powering ways lead Nowye to be a sorrowful and resentful youth.

His father was always known for being a lazy and careless adult and because of this, he was unsuccessful at his job, and his social status.
