1.I guess its representive because this poem tells how the cubans cures wound in sort of a natural, aboriginal way. It makes it seem powerful because the cubans finds a way of cure with nature.

2.its ironic that when a war is happening and you see people die and killed and you call it "little". I think rosa was trying to say that war is never "little"

3.to be a prisoner, hold by the enemies during war. In the book, Silvia was put in reconcentration camp.

    4. I dont think the two of them are interdependent, but as far as I know, I think Lt.Death is interdependent with rosa because Lt.death needs to catch rosa to earn money. But I couldnt think of one that rosa interdependent on Lt.Death

    5. I think fox represents maximo's personality because that maximo used to be a spanish soldier, rebel, then a person who everyone thinks of him as a cuban, which shows that he changes who he is, like a fox.
For, Lion, i think antonio got its name because just like the lion, he is powerful and calm.

    6.
    "Rosa
    Between wars,
    Jose and I were just
    a man and his wife.
    We were free
    to stay together.
Jose never had to leave me
    to scout, or hunt,
    or fight.

    Between wars,
    life was heavenly,
    except when the slavehunters
    were near,
    with our names
    on a list." (Engle 71)

This poem uses anaphora with the phrase "Between wars,"
it told me how they were all free to stay together, so Jose never left Rosa
for scout, hunt,or fight, except when the slavehunters were near.

    1. This poem represents this book because the author talks of a female freed slave, who heals the wounded, fighting for Cuba's independence.

    2.As Rosa said,
    The Little War?
    How can there be
    a little war?...

but all I see is death, always the same,
    always enormous, never little(Engle76).

Reading this I understood that a war should not be called little because even if 1 person dies, it's still a big loss, the effort putting into saving that person, is more than calling a war little.

    3. From reading both Night and The Surrender Tree, I know that a reconcentration camp is a camp were a certian group of people are sent to, to work and do for nothing in return, almost like a prison.

4.Lt.Death is dependent to Rosa because he can't retire or sleep until he kills her with his own hands, Rosa is dependent on him because he is scared of Lt.Death and she can't keep that out of her mind till his dead.

    5. Fox is called Fox because his characteristics and shape are like a fox, Lion is called Lion because he is a local, that means he is th king of the jungle and because he is powerful and calm.

    6.Jose
    A wounded child tells me
he has never seen a grown man
who was proud to be a nurse.

    Women's work, he mocks,
    but I smile-what could be
    more manly than knowing
the strange names and magical uses
    of sturdy medicinal trees
    with powerful, hidden roots?

In those days healing and treating peopel was a women's job, and childern grow up seeing only women doing that job, there amazed at how he is happy doing what a female, but he deos it cause he loves it and he needs to help his wife side by side.

  3. 1) I think the poem on page 73 represents the book as a whole because this is the situation they are it. The poem shows that to heal a wound(war), you have to do the other lines of the poem.
    2) Calling a war little is really ironic because a war is not little. War is something really big that affects many peoples lives. However, Lieutenant Death calls this war “little” because from his perspective, he can only see peasants.
3)A camp which Empire of Spain calls it “a brilliant new concept”. For safety, all Cubans were went to the camp.
4)Lt. Death thinks of killing the witch. AKA Rosa. At the other hand, I do not really see Rosa trying to interact with Lt. Death.
5)Antonio Maceo is represented as a Lion in the book. The name Lion represents his personality because a Lion is a character that takes care of others and is powerful and calm. Which Antonio is. Maximo Gomez is represented as a Fox and I think thats because rebelled against its own club, and went to its opposing group. I think a fox is a character like that.
    6)I climb a palm tree
    and watch the madness
    from my hidden perch.........
This section of the poem on page 89 includes a metonymy. Instead of using the word “war”, Rosa used “madness”.

  4. 1.  The poem on page 73 is frequently quoted to represent this book.  Stylistically, why is this example of Engle's poetry so representative of the book as a whole?  What makes it so powerful?

The poem on page 73 represents the book because although it is short, the poem tells the reader about the lives of the woman healers in Cuba was like back when the war was taking place. The poem is very strong because it is short and striking.

    2.  What is almost ironic about calling a war "little"?

It is ironic that the Little War is called “little” because wars are not little things. People die in wars and so it really is a serious thing. Rosa is saying this in the poem on page 76.

    3.  What are the "reconcentration camps"?

Reconcentration camps are camps that the Spanish made in order for them to secure control over the rebelling Cubans. We don’t really know much detail about the reconcentration camp, but it must be somewhat of an unpleasant thing for rebellious Cubans.

    4.  How is the relationship between Lt. Death and Rosa interdependent?

I think Rosa and Lt. Death’s relationship is interdependent because for Lt. Death, his purpose in life is to capture Rosa and kill her. As for Rosa, Lt. Death is the person she is scared the most. By fearing Lt. Death, maybe it fuels her into helping people because she thinks that what he’s doing is wrong.

    5.  How do the names of the Fox and the Lion represent their personalities?

The names Fox and Lion represent the people’s personalties because the Fox person is slender and wise. He likes to study literature etc. On the other hand, the Lion is large and strong. He is also very understanding.

Pick one poem, write it down, and explicate it.

    One more escape.
    We are safe.
    We whisper.
    We hide.
    We hope.
    We explore
    our new home,
    the vast, glittering caver
    of crystals, darkness, silence....

This poem uses anaphora because it goes “We...” a lot of times. I chose it because I thought it was strongly representing the lifestyle of Rosa and her people. The poem shows fear, hope, curiosity, gratefulness etc.

  5. 1. The poem in page 73 represents the book because the book started with Rosa who cures the wounded, and I wondered how they cured the wounded. Also because the book is about getting the cuban independence, so people who had cured wounds was important during the war, so it represents the book.
    2. Even mafia's can't say wars are little. It is very ironic because wars are never "little" because loosing families and froends are never ever a little thing.
    3. It is like the concentratipn camp where you have to work everyday, they are almost like slaves. For an example, we can see Silivia was one of the person who was sent to the reconcentration camp.
    4. Lt. Death and Rosa is in a way related because Lt. Death was to catch Rosa and kill her because he was gettong money. But Rosa doesn't care about Lt. Death for now.
    5. Antonio can represent lion because lion can mean also the king of the jungle, and Antonio is very strong in power and wise. In kids books, fox are nomally a bad guy. Like Dora the Explorer, the fox is abad guy too, so Maximo can represent fox because he betrayer his rebellion and went to the other side.
    6. "All night I stand guard, singing silently
inside my mind, to keep myself awake

In daylight I sleep, while others watch.
A whistle reaches into my dreams... (Engle 107).

This has a paradox in it because you usually sleep during night awaken during day ( unless you are my dad). Jose has the spirit to save his wife, because night is the time when bad people comes out.

  6. 1. I think this poem represents the book as a whole because we can feel the pain and the tragedy that the people are enduring. Also because it is brief but to the point and has very strong words, the author is tell the people in what kind of situation the Cubans were.

    2. The irony in calling a war "little" is that though one war might seem little compared to other huge wars, it still kills people and make others cry. The actual harm as in statistic might be minor but emotional damages don't change. So really, there is no little wars. If it is a war, no matter what the scale is, it always sadden many people.

    3. The reconcentration camps are the place that Spain Empire made to keep an eye on every Cubans especially the protestors. People only had eight days to reach that place which was obviously unreasonable especially for Silvia who carries her two baby brothers and her sick mother.

    4. The relation between Lt. Death and Rosa is interdependent because for Lt. Death, capturing and killing Rosa is the purpose of his life and what he is willing to do the most. On the other hand, Rosa is afraid of Lt. Death constantly because she knows that he wants to kill her. They are always thinking of each other negatively and it is something that they each other cannot forget or stop worrying about.

    5. Both Fox and Lion have each others' own characteristics. Fox are to be malicious and keen but with not much strength. Instead of using power, he uses his brain to fight. On the other hand, lion has power and is seen to be calm but in my opinion, someone represented as a lion would be someone who is pretty stupid or slow but also very naive.

    6.
This is how you heal a wound:
    Clean the flesh.
    Sew the skin.
    Pray for soul.
    Wait.

I chose this poem because it was the one that stayed in my mind the most. Because it is such a strong but brief poem, it was very effective and influencing to me. I could in a way the pain and also the despair for the never ending come of the wounded rebels.

  7. 1. Even though this poem has really short length, it tells about the book because mainly this whole book is about the two people who cures people, and in that poem it just says what they actually did back then to cure people. This makes it powerful because of its shortness too, since those small words tell us how it was to cure people back then strongly by words.

    2. This is ironic because war that they're having a conflict is the Ten Years War in Cuba that was also called the Big War. I thought that Lt. Death is just telling to himself that this was is little and there will be a day for him to kill Rose and Jose. Also, he might of be able to say this because he is not the ones getting hurt like the cuban; he's on the side of attacking, so he doesn't have to be terrified about when this war will end. But how Rose says it, is that there isn't anything that is little in war if there is anyone killed.

    3. I think the "reconcentration camps" is the camp that the empire of Spain thought of; a camp to expect Cubans to travel to where the Spanish expects, and if they won't, they'll kill the Cubans and rule Cuba easier and faster.

    4. their relation is interdependent because of Lt. Death's death, now Rosa no longer has her enemy to be afraid of; to be afraid of death, and running away from Lt. Death. But as a Lt. Death's situation, I think its kind of sad since it was always his wish to find Rose and kill Rose; but he was unable to accomplish that.

    5. Fox and Lion represents themselves because of their look. Fox is clever, but skinny and not very powerful in physical way, but he's strong in mental way. But Lion is the other way; he is buff-looking, but kind hearted.

    6. Jose (p. 81)
This poem contains anaphora of "Once again". All the paragraphs starts for these two words, This poem shows what he has to do things, again, because of the Spanish ruling Cuba.

  9. 1.This quote represents a book, The Surrender Tree because it mentions about patience. Rosa helps soldiers to heal a wound because they are fighting for Cuban's rights. Although, they are suffering from Spanish power and they are still escaping from the slave hunters, they need patience and perseverance to seek for opportunity to attack.

2.War is never little. Many people could die or be injured from war. War is one big idea of rebelling, however it can also produce many victims. As yet, there are many children who lost their parents because of war. War can impact whole community.

3.Reconcentration camps are where all the peasant Cubans have to enlist within 8 days. Spanish King announced that if anyone found in the countryside after 8 days, they will be shot.

4.They are both aware of each other. Lieutenant Death wants to capture Rosa, so that the Cubans won't be able to rebel anymore. Rosa is horrified because she knows that Spanish soldiers are targeting her.

5.The best word to describe Fox is crafty. Fox is very organized and likes to plan out ideas inside head. Lion is more like a powerful and has ability to make things happen.

6.I see no houses or tents, no hospital....
All I can do is watch with silent tears
    as wounded men, pregnant women,
    and helpless children are herded
    into the camp-
    just another name
    for prison.

I feel sympathy towards Rosa. I would of feel same if I was in that situation. I can feel her frustration that she wants to help them, but she can't.

  10. 1. The poem on page 73 explains that the war brings sadness and that the certainty of peoples lives is not sure. It is a very strong poem because of the word choice and the unsureness of an individuals future in a war.

    2. Calling a war "little" is ironic because people's deaths can not be counted little at all. The little war lasted one year, but in that one year many people died, making the title "little" war, ironic.

    3. Rosa describes the reconcentration camps as a prison where they keep humans. Those camps do not have any buildings at all.

    4. The interdependence between Lieutenant Death and Rosa is that Lieutenant Death is trying to kill Rosa but Rosa is trying to reunite people to show Lieutenant Death that what he is doing is wrong.

    5. The name Fox and Lion fit their persons personality because for the fox the man is smart and for the lion, the man is strong and calm.

    6. Too soon,
    the battles
    begin again.

    Mercifully,
    this new war
    is brief.

    Tragically,
    this new war
    is futile.

    Sometimes, war feels
    like just one more
    form of slavery.

It contains an anaphora because it repeats "this new war" twice in two stanzas.

    3. What are the "reconcentration camps"?
They are unknown camps for protestors to be watched by the Spanish army.
    4. How is the relationship between Lt. Death and Rosa interdependent?
They were friends as children. Lt. Death is hunting Rosa and Rosa is fighting him.
    5. How do the names of the Fox and the Lion represent their personalities?
The fox is supposed to be sneaky. Lion should be strong.
    6. Pick one poem, write it down, and explicate it.
    My mother is weak,

Obediently, I shuffle into the Spanish army's

where I do not know what to expect.
I clutch my little brothers tightly
    in my arms,
secretly wondering if the armed guards can tell
that I am thinking of Rosa's miraculous flowers
    incaves of crystal,
    deep caverns
    of hidden peace.

This is about reconcentration camp and how the protestors don't know how they are going to be treated. Silvia remembers the safety at Rosa's cave.

  12. 1. This quote represent the book because it tells us the life of womens during the war. Also this quote relates to the war it self.

    2. It is very ironic to call a war little. Because in wars thousands of lives will be wasted for one or a high ranked group of people. Wars are never little.

    3. A reconcentration camp is a concentration camp with out violence but a place where you are forced to live.

    4. I think there interdependent because lieautenent death has a mission to kill Rosa.

    5. Antonio is represating the lion because he has the power and lions are the king of animals. But foxes are smart and cunning.

  13. 1. The poem on page 73 is frequently quoted to represent this book and is so powerful because it shows patience, how they waited for the wounded to be healed. It also shows how they stay strong and survive the revolution.

    2. It's almost ironic about calling a war 'little' is that war is not little. War affects a lot of people's lives, people get injured and killed. A lot of people die in wars not 'little' people. War is a tragic thing.

    3. Reconcentration camps are a place made by the Empire of Spain to keep the peasants guarded so that they wouldn't be supplying the rebels food.

    4. The relationship between Lt. Death and Rosa interdependent because Lt.Death wants Rosa dead while Rosa will be at peace until Lt. Death stops hunting her and tries to kill her.

    5. The Fox and the Lion represent their personalities because the Fox is a foreigner. It's one of a kind, the Fox kinda use the mental more than the physical. On the other hand, the Lion represents Antonio Maceo because he is powerful and calm yet uses more physical more than mental.

    6.
    Too soon,

    Sometimes, war feels

    form of slavery.

The poem shows that the war begin again but too soon. Fortunately, it was a short war. Tragically it was a pointless war and it sometimes feel like another form of slavery, how do force people to join the war.

  14. 1. The poem represents the book because the poem well describes what basically happens in the book in a very strong , short poem. Rosa, as the main character represents the poem as well as the situation Cuba is in

    2. Generally, war is war, no matter how small or how big it is, war can NEVER be pleasant. So the expression calling a war "little" is ironic, because it is never good for anyone and causes negativity within the country.

    3. Reconcentration camps is a camp were the Spanish used to control rebelling Cubans. Probably it was like a concentration camp for rebelious Cubans, but there is not much information on this.

    4. They depend on each other because Rosa is a runaway slave, running from Lieutenant Death, whose job is to kill Rosa, or runaway slaves. Without Rosa, Lieutenant death won't have anything to hunt down for.

    5. Foxes and Lions represent people very easily. Foxes are often referred as the sly, sneaky and the wise one. However Lions on the other hand represent strength and they are more vicious.

    6.
    We heal the wounded
    just like before.

    We hide in the jungle
    just like before.

    We are older.
    Are we wiser?

    Sometimes war feels
    like a lonely child's game,
    one that explodes
    out of control.

This poem starts out with a "we" which means that it is an anaphora. And the first two stanzas end with "just like before".
I chose a poem because this expresses the situation within Cuba but also the situation that Jose and Rosa is in.

    1) The poem on page 73 is representative of the book as a whole because it is short and straight to the point, like the book is. It does not create confusion, nor does it give specific details. It is powerful because it is able to send the message across easily.

    2) Calling a war little is ironic because war cannot be little. It can be short but it cannot be little. This is because life is always lost and the loss of life cannot be “little”. The death of one person cannot be less significant or important than another. All humans are equal.

    3) The Reconcentration Camps are camps that are part of a concept invented by Captain-General Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau. This concept requires all peasants to reach the camps in eight days. If they do not, they will be shot. This way, the captain-general is able to control the lands while to others, this act is seen as a way to protect the peasants.

    4) Rosa and Lieutenant Death are interdependent. Lieutenant Death has a job because Rosa is alive. If Rosa was not present, more slaves would have been dead and the Captain-General would not have a job for the slave hunter. However, Rosa creates jobs for him because she gives him for slaves to catch when she heals them. Rosa’s life is affected by the fact that she is being hunted by Lieutenant Death. Her fear is created by his presence but it also gives her joy for being a nurse. He also pressures her to keep her patients protected and gives her more responsibility as a nurse.

    5) The name fox represents Maximo’s personality as a sly individual. He used to work for the Spanish but turned against them. While making them think he is on their side, he is actually on the rebel’s side. He is also slender and pale, like a fox. “Lion” represents Antonio as a powerful and calm man, like a lion. He does not always take part in fights, only when it is necessary for him to, like a king.

    6) We heal the wounded
    Just like before.

    We hide in the jungle
    Just like before

    We are older.
    Are we wiser?

    Sometimes war feels
    like a lonely child’s game,
    one that explodes
    out of control.

There is anaphora in this poem. The first two stanzas use the format “We…………… just like before.” The first three stanzas start with “We”. This poem represents how war is viewed by the people of Cuba. They feel like the war lasts forever. During the war, only time passes and nothing is gained. War is lonely and it is nothing good for the World.

  16. 1. The quote used in page 73 generally represents the book, from the perspective of Rosa, who heals the wounds. The quote is simple, but it is meaningful in many ways. This quote makes it powerful because of the words used in a simple way, in a short term, but at the same time, it gives a intense way of effect towards the reader.

    2. I think that it's totally ironic about calling a war "little" because it's saying the complete opposite thing. War can result in peace, but "war" is not a little event, it's a huge event that involves many deaths and dreadfulness.

    3. The reconcentration camps were a camp from the Spanish empire capturing all the Cuban people, especially the protestors, so it would weaken the revolt and it would also be safe for Spain.

    4. The relationship between Rosa and Lieutenant Death is interdependent because Lieutenant Death is planning and hoping to kill Rosa sometime during the revolution, so no longer slaves and protestors will be healed after injuries and wounds. Rosa is also afraid of Lieutenant Death, but Rosa wants to show that killing and violence isn't the answer.

    5. The nicknames the 'fox' and the 'lion' represents both personalities of characters because the 'fox' has an image of intelligence and being sneaky, while the lion has an image of strength and power, like how it is viewed stereotypically as the king of the jungle, etc.

    6.
    "We experiment
    like scientists.

    One flower cures
    only certain fevers.

    We try another.
We fail, then try a root, leaf,
    moss, or fern....

    One petal fails.
    Another succeeds.

Jose and I are both learning
    how to learn"

    (Engle 42).

This quote describes how Rosa and Jose tries out many types of healing to succeed healing other types of wounds and injuries, and they are learning from their own failures and mistakes from the past. Generally, it's about how mistakes are a part of success, and determination. This quotes includes anaphora, when they use "We" several times.

  17. 1. The poem on page 73 explains that the war brings sadness. Also it tells us how it was to cure people back then strongly by words. The book is about getting the cuban independence, so people who had cured wounds was important during the war.

    2. It is ironic that the Little War is called “little” because wars are not little things. War is something really big that affects many peoples lives.

    3. I think the "reconcentration camps" is the camp that the empire of Spain. It is a camp were a certain group of people are sent to, to work and do for nothing and return,so it is almost like a prison.

    4. The interdependence between Lieutenant Death and Rosa is that Lieutenant Death is trying to kill Rosa. For Rosa, Lt. Death is the person she is scared the most.

5.Antonio Maceo is represented as a Lion in the book, because a Lion is a character that takes care of others and is powerful and calm. Maximo Gomez is represented as a Fox because the man is smart.

    6.
    The witch
    can be heard
    singing in treetops.

    The witch
    can be seen-
    a shadow
    in caves.

    I search,
    and I search.

    She vanishes,
    just like the maddening
    morning mists
    and the wild
    mambi rebels.

    We retreat.
    They hide.
    We seek.

    1. Although the poem is very short, it represents the book as a whole because it tells of the life of Rosa and how she heals her patients. Engle's writing style is very clear and strictly to the point, and this is also shown in the poem. This is also what makes the poem so powerful.

    2. Calling a war "little" is ironic because a war is usually considered a huge, serious thing. Many people die or get injured in wars, and so wars are not considered little.

    3. The reconcentration camps are camps made by the Spanish Empire to rule Cuba easily and also to keep a close watch over the Cuban farmers and protestors. The Cubans are forced to go to reconcentration camps within eight days, and the Spanish army plans to kill anyone found in other areas after eight days.

    4. The relationship between Lt. Death and Rosa is interdependent because Lt. Death is getting afraid that he might turn out to be useless after slavery disappears from Cuba. Chasing after Rosa and the runaway slaves is the only way that he can prove that he is not a useless person. On the other hand, Rosa keeps moving and hiding from Lt. Death and she moves from cave to cave. This gives her a chance to heal more patients and support them so that they can win the war.

    5. The Fox is wise and intelligent, and he likes to study philosophy and poetry. The lion, however, is strong and calm. He is often called the "Bronze Titan" because of his strength.

    6.
    Between wars,
    Jose and I were just
    a man and his wife.
    We were free
    to stay together.
Jose never had to leave me
    to scout, or hunt,
    or fight.

    Between wars,
    life was heavenly,
    except when the slavehunters
    were near,
    with our names
    on a list.

This poem has anaphora on the beginning of each stanza, where the phrase "Between wars" repeat. The poem explains about how Rosa and Jose lived their lives happily when there was no war going on. There lives were very different from the ones during wars, and they lived in peace. There is a bit of a mood change at the end where it explains about the slavehunters chasing Rosa and Jose.

  19. 1. The poem tells about the book because it talks about what happens when someone get healed. I think that the book is all about witches and magic of healing so I think that the poem represents the book itself.

    2. Why its ironic is because the "little" war was actually pretty big. You would see people die and dead all around you. I think rosa meant the opposite and was trying to say wars usually aren't little.

    3. The reconsintration camps are basically camps which holds prisoners from war. Its basically a prison or for some its a place where slaves work.

    4. Lt. Death is trying to capture Rosa and then kill her. He is only trying to kill Rosa because he wants money and if Rosa is dead then he gets paid. I think thats the reason that their relationship is interdependent

    5. I think that the fox and the lion are two different personalities. The fox can be a smart and sneaky personality and the lion can be the calm and leader of the jungle so he is the responsible kind of character.

    6. (Pg. 43)
This poem is about lt.Death searching for Rosa. Its repitition in the third stanza "I search and I search."(Engle 43) This says that he searches for a long time. and the way the poem talks about many things is interesting. The poe makes it sound like Lt. Death is the good guy and that Rosa is the bad guy but it is actually the other way around.

  20. 1. The poem which is on page 73, represents the book because even though it is short, the poems tells the reader about the lives of the women healers in Cuba, and what it was like back when the war was taking place. The poem is very strong because it is short but at the same time striking.

    2. Calling a war "little" is ironic, because wars are never small, no matter how long the last. Wars are big, because it takes place in a large area, and alot of people die, which is not a small situation.

    3. Reconcentration camps are camps that were made Spanish, for them to secure their control over the rebelling Cubans. It probably is something like a concentration camp, but we do not know alot of info about it.

    4. Their relationship is interdependent because Lt. Death is the one who is hired to kill Rosa, while she is scared of him.

    5. Fox and Lion represent them because of the way they are. Fox is clever, sneaky and skinny, which represents Rosa. While the Lion is strong, fierce and has a killer instinct, just like Lt. Death has.

    6. "I climb a palm tree and watch the madnessfrom my hidden perch" (Engle 89). Instead of using the word “war”, Rosa used “madness”, and this is Metonymy.

  21. 1. Although very short in length, the poem on page 73 represents the lives of the healers, the pain of the war in simple words. "Pray for the soul. Wait" (Engle 73). From these last two lines, I feel as though it is trying to show that they pray and wait for the war to end, therefore it represents it well since the book is about Cuban Independence.

    2. It is ironic because no war is little. No matter how much weapons or injurires or people that were involved define how big a war was, it always causes pain and deaths in all sorts of way. War is killing, and there is nothing " little" about that.

    3. The reconcentration camp was a camp set by the Spanish to capture the rebelling Cubans and eventually kill them.

4.The relation bewteen Lt.Death and Rosa is interdependent. Lt.Deasth longed to kill Rosa and gain himself some money, he neede Rosa to heal him when he fell off the tree and he needed her to know the locations of where the slaves were hiding. Rosa on the other hand was very afraid inside of the slave hunters, and by hearing rumours of where Lt.Death was, she was able to escape and hide safely without being killed.

5.Maximo Gomez is described as a fox because of the changes he makes, similar to a fox. On the other hand, Antonio Maceo is described as a lion because of his power and calmness.

    6.Nothing makes sense now.
I long to retire, on a farm with a view
    of the sunset,
and a porch with a rocking chair...
just as sonn as I kill
    the old witch...

This stanza is taken from page 82 written in Lt. death's perspective. It is a free verse and doesn't contain much of any poetic terminology, however i like it a lot because i think it shows the time past, and the change in the character. He no longer just wants to kill the witch, but he longs for a normal life. It shows that he is tired too and wants to end the battle. He no longer refers Rosa as the little witch, but as the old witch which represent the long period of time that had past.

  22. 1.This quote represents the book because it is short, but have a powerful message. It is very clear and understandable.

    2. It is ironic to call the war little because it actually have a big affect. Many things would be lost, such as person's life or houses.

    3. Reconcentration camp is a camp to keep the peasants. If they could not reach the town in eight days, they will get shot.

    4. Lt. Death depends on Rosa because he is ordered to kill her, so he could not relax. Rosa depends on Lt. Death because she is chased by him.

    5. Fox is called by this name because of the appearance. Lion is named for him because he is strong and calm.

    6.
"Once again, the Fox and the Lion gallop
across our green mountains and farms,
burning the sugar fields and coffee groves,
the tobacco plantations, scented smoke rising
    like a wild strom
    of hope...

Once again, I guard Rosa's hospitals
while she nurses the sick and wounded
    in secret places, thatched huts,
    and glittering caves...

    Once again, we travel invisibly,
slipping through lines of Spanish forts and troops
    on moonless nights,
puffing cigars to make our movements
    look like blinking dance
    of fireflies..." (Engle 81).

This poem contains anaphora. On the begginig of each stanza, the word "Once again" is in it.

  23. 1. It's represents because this poem is a short poem but very strong. It talks about the pain in war and talks about people's lives.

    2. The ironic thing about calling the war "little" is that Rosa is saying in the poem that war is NOT little. It's actually something serious that people can die.

    3. I think it's like prison, you work hard and you have no return for that.

    4. Lt Death is trying to kill Rosa so Rosa is depending on Lt Death. Rosa is getting chased by LT death.

    5. The lion is strong and calmness but the fox is clever.

    6.

    Rosa is a bully
I thought she would be sweet and kind ,
but she forces me to sip my soup,
and she stitches a cut on my forehead,
just a scratch from a thorn in the forest,
but she studies it the way I studied the forts at the camp, with the holes for guns
    that look like eyes.
    The needle hurts,the thread itches.
Maybe I dont want to be a nurse after all.
Speed, Rosa tells me,is the best painkiller,
so she stitches my skin quickly, calm,
I think this poem means that she thought Rosa will be a better person then now.

  24. 1)It is because the example talks about what Rosa does. She takes care of injured people, and she prayed for freedom and for people to get better. It is powerful because in these short phrases, the author could represent the situation realistically so it has an impact.

2)It is ironic because war is big in general, not little at all. It affects the whole country, people, and everything. But the author is saying that the war is little which is very ironic

3)The reconcentration camp is a place that people are going to be kept for safety. The Empire of Spain thought that it was a brilliant new concept. People had only eight days to reach the camp, or else they will be shot.

4)Lt. Death’s aim is to kill Rosa, but he can’t and he even got cured from Rosa. Rosa is afraid of Lt. Death coming to kill her. But even though he is her enemy, she still cured Lt. Death. So without Rosa, Lt. Death wouldn’t have really existed.

5)Fox sounds clever and wise, but no that strong. So the fox could be a representation of an animal as a mental one. And the lion is strong, and ferocious. The lion looks strong, and could be represented as a physical animal.

    6)To soon,
    the battles
    begin again.

    Mercifuly,
    this new war
    is breif.

    Tragically,
    this new war
    is futile.

    Sometimes, war feels
    just like one more
    form of slavery.

This poem is a short description about war.
It is saying that the war is beginning again, and that war is simple. I think it means that it's basically killing and fighting. And then it talks about that the war is meaningless. Then it talks about that the war is just like slavery. For those people, war and slavery have the same amount of pain.

  25. 1) The poem is very short but very strong. It represents the book because it talks about the lives of the women healers in Cuba.
    2) Calling a war "little" is ironic because the war is not little event. The war is really big event and it’s really violence.
    3) I think “reconcentration camps” is like a concentration camp. And you have to work everyday. There’s one Ex. In the book, Silvia was put in reconcentration camp.
    4) The relation between Lt. Death and Rosa is interdependent because Lieutenant Death was hunting Rosa and he was trying to kill.
    5) The Fox is clever but skinny and not really powerful. The Lion is really strong and very powerful.
    6) Once again, the Fox and the Loin gallop

This poem contains anaphora because it repeats “Once again” three times.

  26. 1.I think the poem on page 73 is the representative because even though the passage is short, it describes the situation where the woman are healing during the war.

2.It is ironic calling a war "little" because many people are lost from this incident and wars are not something that easy; something serious.

    3. Reconcentration Camp is a place where the Spain Empire patrols the Cubans, especially the protesters.

    4. Rosa and Lt. Death weren't interdependent at all because Lt.Death had passed away trying to murder Rose and as for Rose, his death might've been something good because she was fearing against him.

5.The fox represents the people who are slender and wise, intelligent. the Lion represents people who are large and powerful.

    6. The poem on page 61 by Jose uses anaphora because it repeats the word "We" around 5 times.

  27. 1. The poem on page 73 is very short yet strong, because it shows what exactly healers had to go through and Cubans in general. Despiting the length, the word choice is great because it represents the book as a whole.

    2. The ironic part is that the war in Cuba can not be called "little" at all. It had such a big impact on people's lives, their country and future.

    3. Reconcentration camps were made by Spanish to force all the Cubans live there, otherwise within the 8 days everyone outside will be shot. Spanish call it a camp, but it's actually a place just like prison.

    4. Even though so many years passed, Lt. Death still wants to kill Rosa no matter what. As for Rosa, Lt. Death, is the biggest fear in her life.

    5. The fox is smart and cunning, it always finds new ways of doing something. While the lion has the strength and patience.

    6. p. 70
That poem says that as the years went buy people still have to heal others and hide in the jungle. But they are questioned of all of that made them more mature.

  28. 1. The poem on page 73, has very short word, that makes stronger and shows more meanings to each word. It talks about how to heal a wound, and this is my opinion, but I thought this was Allegory, about this Cuba's war.

    2. The ironic part of calling a war "Little", is that war is actually big. Many things are lost, and many things get stolen. Human life gets hunted, and farms and houses get fired.

    3. Reconcentration Camps are an Spanish camp, where Spanish tells all the Cubans to go in to the camp, or else the Cubans outside of the camp get shot. Some Injuries and runaway sneaks out from the camp to get to the heal cave.

    4. Lieutenant Death is still trying to hunt Rosa, and his husband Jose. Rosa sneaks away From Lieutenant Death so that she can heal people.

    5. Fox are represented as smart and cleaver, but does not have much power. Lion is represented as Strong and Loyal, and have large power.

    6.
    We heal the wounded
    just like before.

    We hide in the jungle
    just like before.

    We are older.
    Are we wiser?

    Sometimes war feels
    like a lonely child's game,
    one that explodes
    out of control.

This poem tells that Rosa and Jose is healing the injuries for a long time, getting a knowledge from the forest. They get to hide in the jungle, and get a time to think about the war. They start to think that a war is sad, lonely thing that destroys their self by their self.

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. The poem on page 73 is short but it is really powerful because this poem is explaining how Rosa heals the wounded very simply. The thing is people call what Rosa does a miracle but actually it's nothing special but then still people make the Rosa's ability very special.

    2. There is no such a thing like small war or big war because if there is definition of small war and big war is that mean some lives are smaller or bigger than other lives ? No.

3.Reconcentration camps is what Spain came out with. They told the Cubans that they have 8 days to get there or less everyone will be shot but so many people getting there in 8 days is impossible. Also the situation in camps is really bad that Silvia's mother and her twin brother were starving. Basically, the camps was to control them easily.

    4. It is pretty funny because Lt.Death has purpose of his life because Rosa is still there since most of the slaves were set free only thing Lt.Death could hunt were Rosa and Jose but then they are giving him a purpose to live. For Rosa Lt.Death is just little dangerous thing in her sweet life with her husband.

    5. Lion represents person who is calm but very powerful and nice also. Fox represents someone who is very wise.

    6. Page 86-87
    Silvia speaking.
This poem is basically telling what kind of situation Silvia is in. She has sick mother and baby twin brother but the reconcentration camps is not so helpful so she decided to look for Rosa but then even though she is 11 she is already started to suspecting people which tells how Cuba's situation even changes kid. And the legend of Rosa is becoming her another hope which means it is very hard for her to stand alone.

  30. 1) Because the entire book is written very concisely and contains(?) aphorism. This little poem is also written very briefly and has aphorism. It is also very strong because it is just, again, short and to the point, leaving a big impact of how hard it is to save people's lives, yet kind of simple, at the same time.
    2) War is a big deal. War is not a minor thing. Many people die due to greediness. And anyways, how can death be considered a small thing? It is an important aspect of human lives.
    3) The reconcentration camps are probably camps where the Cubans (especially the rebelling ones) were forced to move in, in eight days, or else they will get shot. It is probably a miserable place to stay, according to the book's description.
4)That is because their relationship is not affected by anyone else. At first, Lt. Death was probably asked to capture Rosa, but then, gradually, it became the goal of his life. On the other hand, Rosa is always afraid of Lt. Death more than any slavehunter. This means that capturing Rosa is a personal matter for Lt. Death, now.
5)That is because, we have adapted the thinking that foxes are wise, and quick; lions are powerful, fast, & not afraid of anything. These characteristics are found in the characters of Fox and Lion and both characters bravely fight.
    6)Page 85 - Rosa
    Eight days?
    Eight days.
    Weyler is a madman.
    How can he expect
so many to travel so far
    so quickly

    Eight days.
    Impossible.
    Thousands of families
will not even hear about the order to reconcentrate in camps within eight days.

This explains how much Rosa cares about the people in Cuba, humanity as whole, and how negative she thinks of Weyler's idea. Also, this poem contains anaphora, and maybe aphorism. Also, like the entire book, this is free verse.

  31. 1. The poem on page 73 is very powerful because this poem is simple. Even if it is simple, this poem represents this book because Rosa is curing these injured people. This poem tells us how Rosa is curing the wounded people.

    2. It is ironic because war is not a little thing. In the war, people die and people get injured. Even if it is a little war or a big war, war is a big thing and it's important. Calling a war little is calling that people injured or people dying is a little thing and no one cares but people dying isn't a little thing.

    3. The reconcentration camp is a camp that is for people to gather to that place. The Empire of Spain said that anyone that is not in the concentration camp will be shot.

    4. Lt. Death and Rosa's relationship is interdependent to because He wants to kill Rosa. Rosa is interdependent to Lt. Death because he is the scariest person for her. She is aware of Lt. Death killing her.

    5. Antonio Maceo represents the Lion because the Lion is powerful. Maximo Gomez represents the Fox because Fox are wise.

    6.
    We heal the wounded
    just like before.

    We hide in the jungle
    just like before.

    We are leer.
    Are we wiser?

    Sometimes war feels
    like a lonely child's game,
    one that explodes
    out of control.

This poem has a anaphora for example the "we", and the "we…just like before". I chose this poem because this poem represents the lifestyle of Jose and Rosa.

  32. 1. The poem on page 73 is powerful because it's simple and there are no difficult words. Also, the poem is to the point.

    2. It is ironic because war isn't a little thing. Many people get killed in war and it destroye villages and towns.

    3. The reconcentration camp is set by the Spanish. They try to capture and kill the Cubans.

    4. I think Rosa and Lt. Death's relationship is interdependent because Lt. Death is trying to kill Rosa. And Rosa needs to watch out for him.

    5. Fox and Lion represent their personalities because a fox is a person who's sneaky and wise. A lion is big and strong.

  33. 1. The poem on page 73 is powerful because it uses simple and "to the point" language to express how Rosa does her work, which is something we see throughout the whole book.

    2. It's ironic to call a war little because a war is never little. Although one war can be smaller then another, they are in fact the same, in that in both wars people die, and both sides have casualties. It's ironic to call people dying "little", when in fact it's a big deal.

    3. The reconcentration camps are camps that were made by the Lieutenant-General in order to get the peasants into the city so that they would not be able to help the rebels.

    4. Rosa needs Lieutenant Death in order for her to stay on guard and on her toes, so that she can stay alert and safe, as Lieutenant Death is always chasing her, and she must always run away. Lieutenant Death depends on Rosa because it's his job to chase her, and since she always gets away, it means that his job is endless, and he always has work.

    5. The Lion represents Antonio Maceo, who is said to be powerful and calm (much like a lion). The Fox represents Maximo Gomez, who is said to be wise and sly and slender.

    6. (Page 70, Jose) This poem has anaphora because it says "just like before", a lot.

  34. 1.This poem on pg. 73 is strong and powerful because it is "to the point" and represents what Rosa does to help people throughout the book.

2.It is ironic that it was called a little war because even though less people die, the people that died would be dead. "The Little War? How can there be a little war? Are some deaths smaller than others, leaving mothers who weep a little less?" (Engle 76).

3.The reconcentration camps were made by the Spanish. They were made to get the people so they can't help the rebels. Anyone not in the reconcentration camps in eight days and caught would be shot/

4.Rosa andLieutenant Death need eachother because without Rosa, Lieutenant Death wouldn't have the job he has and might be fighitn in the war instead. Rosa need Lieutenant Death because he keeps her safe. Even though he hunts her down, Rosa becomes more careful and keeps her alive.

5.The Lion represents Antonio Maceo, who is powerful and strong. The Fox represents Maxio Gomez who was once a Spanish soldier who is wise and sly like a fox.

    6.
"I am eleven years old, and my life is this farm.
    My father is dead,
    and my mother is sick.
    My life is planting, harvesting,
and caring for my twin brothers.

    Only eight days...
    impossible to believe.

I do not pack our things right away.
First I wait to see if this strange rumor
    is true.
    Then, brightly uniformed troops
    burn our house,
swooping across our farm like hungry birds,
stealing the wagon and oxen, horses, mules,
    even the chickens,
    and the cow we need
for milk to feed the twins,
    my baby brothers-
    will they starve?

Nothing is left to pack, not even clothes,
so I walk away from the farm,
    leading my mother,
    and carrying babies,
while my eyes watch the mountains,
    and my thoughts turn
    toward tales of healers
    the legend of Rosa...
    (Engle 86-87).

This poem shows that Silvia thinks that she might not make it to the camps on time or might not be able to keep her or her family alive. She is eleven with no father, a sick mother, and twin baby brothers. Her house was burned down, her farm animals and wagon stolen. She thinks of going to Rosa, whom she hears myths of, and perhaps have her mother get better and can hide with her.
