    1.“I felt an odd tingling and my ears filled with a crackling sound” (Torrey 47). this quote shows that there was a lightning during the sailing. however, a lightning cannot be green. so maybe something reflected on the ocean and the color maybe was abit green. and i think thats the green light.

    2.St.Elmo is sort of the god that helps ships from disasters and everyone thought st.elmo helped them arive to brazil.

    3 absolute calm.because if the terryfying wind blows the ship will be wobbly and i will get sea sick

  2. 1. I think the green flames are some kind of reflection against the ocean or the lightning, but usually, green flames aren't possible, so they might be referring 'flames' as lightning because sometimes lightnings can be green.

    2. St. Elmo appears when something unfortunate happens, such as thunderstorms during sailing in the ocean. St. Elmo is famous for St. Elmo's Fire.

    3. I would prefer absolute calmness because if its terrifying wind, it might wreck the ship or it might change the flow of the water. It will also give the sailors some seasick difficulties on aboard.

    4. Mateo was right to be on Magellan's side because Magellan is wiser than Cartenega in many ways, and Magellan was stronger and he had more experience of exploration.

    5. They saw a bird, and they thought that bird was from Brazil so they knew that they were close to Brazil. They also smelt the fragrance of the pure tropical jungle.

    6. They thought they landed on paradise because everything was tropical, and it was a very good natural environment for them. They had rainfall for the first days, and they also saw many beautiful native women on the island.

    7. Garroting is a way of suffering or killing a person by strangling.

    8. They both tried to translate their words by gestures and drawing the meaning on sand and his sketchbook. They repetetively used sign by their hands and gestures mostly to make them understand their language.

  3. 1. I think the green flames were the lightning, since Rodrigo and Mateo was making fun of God so they thought god was punishing them. But lightnings cant be green.

    2. It is known as St.Elmo's fire or St. Elmo's light. I think it is a god in ocean who saves ships from disasters.

    3. Absolute calm. I dont like it to be too calm but if on ships, it might damage the ship and a horrible sea sick.

    4. He was right because Magellan has experience of exploration, and also captain- general, in a high rank. He is more wiser than Cartegena, where he does all sorts of bad stuff.

  4. 1. I think the green flames are from the God. People believed that green flames are a sign of protection. “God has heard our prayers!” (Torrey 47). But, there is no such “green flames” so I think it was just their imagination.

    2. Saint Elmo was the patron of sailors. It was believed that he creates green flames to clear the weather and to save people from death

    3. I would rather been in absolute calm. Terrifying means scary. You never want to take risks as much as possible. Terrifying wind can damage ships and there is a chance of capsize.

    4. If Mateo was on Cartenaga’s side, he would have also got imprisoned. Almost every crew member supported Magellanes. For my personal opinion, Magellanes is always calm and he can make smart decisions.

    5. Brightly colored land bird settled on the quarterdeck railing and the next day, Mateo and Rodrigo smelled the fragrance of jungle.

    6.Because there were many women being naked and they were beautiful. “I stared at the women. How could I not? I had never seen a naked woman before” (Torrey 62).

  5. 1. To be honest, I have no idea what the green flame is about. Guessing that it was just a illusion because Mateo just had big waves splashed all over him. Though Rodrigo thinks God helped him.

    2. Rodrigo said he had seen same situation and said it is San Elmo, the saint of sailors.

    3. Well, it will be depends on the situation. If I have enough food left and plenty of time with people to pull an oars then I will go for absolute calm (also I have to know where am I going to). But then If I did not have any time and food or people then probably hope for the best and go for terrifying wind because you do not want to know too long without any food and die.

    4. There would be many reasons. Biggest reason would be Magellan is very wise and also Espinosa is on Magellan's side who has power of marines.

    5. The first sign was brightly colored land bird and the second sign was the smell of the land.

    6. Because there were like 100 beautiful ladies naked standing.

    I would rather been in terrifying wind.

    It was wise for Mateo to stick with Magellan because he can be alive.

    The first sign of land is a jungle of Brazil.

    they think they landed in paradise because of all the naked women.

    A collar is on the neck and if you tighten it the person will die from strangulation.

    They played the guitar and sang and drew pictures in the dirt.

  7. 1. I think the green flames were the lighting except lighting can't be green.. so maybe it reflected from the ocean.

    2. St Elmo is a person who everyone thought that was a person who can save people from death; he is famous from the St Elmo's fire.

    3. I would rather be in "absolute calm" because I would face fear if I'm in the terrifying wind. Terrifying wind usually causes accidents and can break things like maybe ships. I would prefer calmess better than terrifying.

    4. I think it was smart for Mateo to become on Magellane's side because right now Cartegana is in jail, which means that everyone went on Magellane's side. I sometimes disagree what Caretegana thinks and do. So I think it was smart for Mateo to become on Magellane's side.

    5. When they first saw a bird, the people thought it was from Brazil so that means that they are close to Brazil;

    6. Because there were good environment, pretty woman's which had no clothes on, Mateo had never seen a pretty native woman in his life.

    2. St. Elmo was a saint for sailors. St. Elmo’s fire was named after him.

    3. I would rather be in absolute calm than in terrifying wind, because wind can break ships and it might change the direction. It is better not moving at all than going the opposite way, especially on sea.

    4. Mateo was wise to stick with Magellan, because Espinosa, the King, and other marines was on his side. If he was with Cartagena he might have been punished.

    5. The sailors noticed they were near land because they saw the bird from Brazil.

    6. Rodrigo and Mateo thought they were in paradise, because the conditions were good and there were beautiful women. People traded items with fruits.

    3. I would be in absolute calm because if I take terrifying wind, there will be horrible seasick, and the ship will be messed up.

    4. Mateo was wise to stick with Magellan because Magellan is has more experiences than Cartagena and he was more stronger than Cartagena.

    3.I would rather like to be in absolute calm because when there is a storm, the ship will be unstable. It will be dangerous to sail on that bad weather.

  17. 1. I think that the flames were caused by the lightning. It may also be because the gods were sending some sort of message.

    2.St. Elmo was a man who everyone thought could save them.They thought
    that he helped the boat and sailors.

    3. Absolute calm winds. Because if I was in very strong winds then ill beBlow away but if the wild was calm then there will only be a little breeze and thats the sort of wind I like.

    4. There are many reasons why that seems to happen. The main reason i would think is that Magellan is a wise man so Mateo wants to learn from Magellan

    5. They saw a little bird flying and then they noticed that there was an island near them.
